How to Take Lehenga Measurements at Home

Pro Tip: Always take measurements wearing the undergarments you'll wear with the outfit. Have someone help you for more accurate results.

1. Bust/Chest

Wrap the measuring tape around the fullest part of your bust, keeping the tape parallel to the floor. Make sure the tape is snug but not tight, and you can breathe comfortably.

Tip: Wear the bra you plan to wear with the lehenga for accurate measurement.

2. Under Bust

Measure directly under your bust where the bra band sits. Keep the tape horizontal and snug.

Tip: This is crucial for blouses with fitted bodices or corset-style designs.

3. Waist

Measure around your natural waistline, which is typically the narrowest part of your torso, about 1-2 inches above your belly button. Do not suck in your stomach.

Tip: Tie a string around your waist and let it naturally fall to your natural waist position.

4. Hip

Measure around the fullest part of your hips and buttocks, keeping the tape parallel to the floor.

Tip: Stand with feet together for most accurate hip measurement.

5. Shoulder Width

Measure from the edge of one shoulder to the edge of the other shoulder, across your upper back.

Tip: Keep your shoulders relaxed in their natural position, not pulled back.

6. Blouse/Choli Length

Measure from the highest point of your shoulder, over the bust, down to where you want the blouse to end (typically at the waist).

Tip: Decide if you want a short, medium, or long blouse style before measuring.

7. Sleeve Length

Measure from the shoulder point to where you want the sleeve to end (wrist, elbow, or shoulder). Keep your arm slightly bent.

Tip: If you want full sleeves, measure with arm slightly bent at 90 degrees for comfort.

8. Armhole

Measure around the armhole where the sleeve will attach. Start at the top of your shoulder and go around under your arm.

Tip: This ensures the blouse will not be too tight under the arms.

9. Lehenga Waist

Measure where the lehenga will sit on your waist. This is usually at your natural waist or slightly below.

Tip: Account for any petticoat or padding you will wear underneath.

10. Lehenga Length

Measure from where the lehenga will sit on your waist down to where you want it to end (typically just touching the floor).

Tip: Wear the heels you will wear with the outfit when taking this measurement.

11. Lehenga Flare

Measure the circumference at the bottom of where the lehenga will end. This determines how full your lehenga will be.

Tip: More flare means a fuller, more voluminous lehenga.

Common Measurement Mistakes to Avoid

1

Measuring over bulky clothing - Always measure in fitted clothes or undergarments

2

Pulling the tape too tight - The tape should be snug but not compressing your skin

3

Not standing straight - Stand naturally with good posture, do not slouch or stand too rigid

4

Measuring without help - Many measurements are difficult to take accurately by yourself

5

Forgetting to account for petticoat or padding thickness

6

Taking measurements at different times of day when body size fluctuates

7

Not recording measurements immediately - Write them down as you take them

8

Measuring in different units - Be consistent with inches or centimeters throughout

Step-by-Step Lehenga Measurement Process

  1. Gather tools: fabric measuring tape (not metal), pen, paper, and a helper
  2. Wear the undergarments and shapewear you'll wear with the lehenga
  3. Put on the heels you plan to wear (for accurate length measurement)
  4. Stand in front of a full-length mirror with good lighting
  5. Start with upper body measurements (bust, under bust, shoulders)
  6. Move to torso measurements (waist, hips)
  7. Take blouse-specific measurements (length, sleeve, armhole)
  8. Finally, measure lehenga-specific dimensions (waist, length, flare)
  9. Write down each measurement immediately with clear labels
  10. Double-check all measurements by taking them twice
