How to Take Anarkali Measurements at Home

Pro Tip: Always take measurements wearing the undergarments you'll wear with the outfit. Have someone help you for more accurate results.

1. Bust/Chest

Measure around the fullest part of your bust, keeping the tape parallel to the floor. Make sure it is snug but comfortable.

Tip: Anarkali suits need slightly more room than fitted outfits for comfortable movement.

2. Under Bust

Measure directly under your bust where the empire waist seam will sit.

Tip: Critical for empire waist Anarkali styles - this is where the fitted portion ends.

3. Waist

Measure around your natural waistline. For empire waist styles, also measure where you want the waist seam.

Tip: Specify if you want traditional waist or empire waist style.

4. Hip

Measure around the fullest part of your hips. This ensures enough room for the flare to sit properly.

Tip: Even though Anarkalis are flared, proper hip measurement prevents pulling.

5. Shoulder Width

Measure from one shoulder edge to the other across your upper back.

Tip: Important for proper sleeve attachment and comfortable arm movement.

6. Shoulder to Waist

Measure from the shoulder point down to your natural waistline over your bust.

Tip: Helps determine where the flare should start for empire waist styles.

7. Anarkali Length

Measure from shoulder point down to where you want the Anarkali to end (floor, ankle, knee).

Tip: Wear heels you plan to wear with the outfit for accurate floor-length measurement.

8. Sleeve Length

Measure from shoulder point to desired sleeve end (full, 3/4, or elbow length).

Tip: Keep arm slightly bent for comfort, especially for fitted sleeves.

9. Armhole

Measure around where the sleeve attaches, from shoulder top, under arm, back to shoulder.

Tip: Proper armhole ensures comfortable movement and prevents gaping.

10. Neck Depth (Front)

Measure from the hollow at base of neck to desired neckline depth.

Tip: Consider the occasion and your comfort level with neckline depth.

11. Neck Depth (Back)

Measure from nape of neck to desired back neckline position.

Tip: Back neckline is usually higher than front for traditional Anarkalis.

12. Flare Circumference

Measure around where you want the bottom of the Anarkali (at hem).

Tip: More circumference = fuller, more dramatic flare. Typical is 100-150 inches.

Common Measurement Mistakes to Avoid

1

Not accounting for the flare - Anarkalis need specific hip and flare measurements

2

Measuring length without heels - Always wear your planned footwear

3

Confusing empire waist with natural waist measurements

4

Not specifying flare volume - designers need to know how full you want it

5

Measuring too tight - Anarkalis need ease for comfortable movement and dancing

6

Forgetting to measure from shoulder to under-bust for empire waist styles

7

Not communicating if you want traditional or contemporary fit

8

Ignoring sleeve style preferences - fitted vs. flared sleeves need different measurements

Tips for Different Anarkali Styles

  1. Floor-Length: Measure with heels on, add 1 inch for comfort
  2. Knee-Length: Measure to just below knee for modest coverage
  3. Empire Waist: Focus on under-bust and shoulder-to-underbust measurements
  4. A-Line Anarkali: Less flare, more fitted through hips
  5. Umbrella Cut: Maximum flare, need full circumference measurement
  6. Jacket Style: Need additional measurements for jacket layer
